The history of Rowney Green Players goes back to 1923 where is started life as a Shakespearean Society, performing many of the Bard’s works in the local village hall and entering and winning many festivals.
The group thrived in the early years having great support from the locals. The early archive books can be seen on display at Alvechurch Museum and are well worth a look. With the breakout of war in 1939 the company took a back seat and re-emerged in 1944 with a production of ‘The Farmer’s Wife’. This was the beginning of a new era as they began to incorporate other productions apart from Shakespeare. ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ performed in 1987 was the last Shakespeare play to be staged.
The Group now delivers two productions a year performing a mix of drama, thriller, farce, pantomime and musical. We pride ourselves on our sets and costumes, having a costume wardrobe with many original pieces.
In order for the group to continue to grow and thrive we are always looking for new blood, be it in acting, backstage or general help. Putting on a production is hard work but we have a lot of fun in the process and have achieved quality productions.
